Hi, my name is Pamela, and I’m the Co-Owner and Practice Manager here at Northern Dental Design at Epping in Melbourne.

Yesterday, Dr Zina was speaking with one of our patients, Evelyn from Thomastown. At her appointment, she asked Dr Zina, “Why are regular dental checkups necessary?” We get asked this all the time, so I thought I’d make a video to share with you what Dr Zina shared with her.

Dental check-ups appointments, also known as hygiene appointments at Northern Dental Design are very important to us so we can help you maintain that beautiful smile and prevent any serious problem. Just like we take our car to get a service and check the tyres, we need to check that our mouth and teeth are in good shape as we use them all day.

Hygiene appointments are very important, they enable the dentist or the hygienist to check for cavities. We want to make sure if we find anything, we can sort it out for you as soon as possible, so it doesn’t become a bigger issue. Or if you have had some fillings done previously, we will check to make sure they are still functioning correctly.

At your hygiene appointment, we will also professionally clean your teeth and gums. Through this, we can remove the plaque or the build-up on your teeth. The scale and clean will remove the bad bacteria that have been sitting on your teeth no matter how diligent we are with the brushing of our teeth at home, we always need a professional to get into the spots that we cannot see or reach. Even me, I always have a clean every six months. Because even though I am a dentist, we are human too, and cannot reach all these spaces and we get build-up also.

We also use your hygiene appointment to prevent gum disease. Gum disease is when the plaque or a tartar build-up reaches under the gum level, and the gums become red, puffy and swollen. Gums may bleed when you brush or even touch your teeth. Sometimes, this even causes bad breath. But the most important thing is sometimes, there are no signs until it is too late.

The health of your teeth does affect the health of your whole body. And we want to make sure you live your best life.

I hope this gives you better insights on the importance of regular dental check-ups and cleans. By the way, if you are looking for a new dentist to look after you and your family, we would love to look after you. Why not give us a call, send us a direct message on social media, or complete the enquiry form on our website, and we will help you organise your appointment. We look forward to meeting you.
