Sleep and Sedation Dentistry

Sleep and Sedation Dentistry Epping, Wollert, South Morang, Melbourne

Dental anxiety affects over one-third of the population and prevents many patients from receiving proper dental care. But you don’t have to let fear stop you from a healthy smile, because our team at Northern Dental Design can help with sleep and sedation dentistry. We will help put you at ease, so you are relaxed and comfortable during any dental procedure.

What is Sleep and Sedation Dentistry?

Sleep and sedation dentistry are services that help lessen dental anxiety and fears during dental treatment, which allows the dentist to work while you relax. There are different forms of sedation and most are well tolerated by our patients, even children. After an initial evaluation of your medical history, we may use laughing gas or IV sedation, depending on what is best for you.

Sleep Dentistry

Sleep dentistry is a form of sedation that brings you very close to sleep without the use of a general anesthetic. It is administered intravenously, which is why it is also known as IV sedation. Your appointment will be overseen by a registered nurse and a registered Dental Sedationist, so Dr Zina Mahdi can complete your dental work quickly and efficiently.

Benefits of sleep dentistry include an extreme sense of relaxation and sedation, with no anxiety or fear. You will be sedated enough so that you do not focus on the treatment, but you will feel rested when the treatment is over, and you awake. Sleep dentistry ensures that you remain comfortable during the entire procedure, and even allows for multiple dental treatments in one visit, saving you both time and money.

Sedation Dentistry

Our staff at Northern Dental Design uses nitrous oxide for sedation dentistry. Better known as “laughing gas” or “happy gas,” nitrous oxide is an effective and safe way to help patients relax. Sedation is a means of producing a state of calm, but stops short of putting one to sleep. With nitrous oxide, you will be alert enough to hear and respond to the dentist and ask questions, but you will also be able to relax while anxiety and stress are greatly reduced.

To administer nitrous oxide, a mask is placed on your nose and you will breathe a combination of the gas and oxygen. We can easily control the amount of gas, so you get only what you need. It works quickly and once your treatment is complete, recovery takes only minutes. This means you can easily drive yourself to and from your dental appointments.

Dental and Oral Health

We are happy to offer our patients sleep and sedation dentistry to help them relax. Dental visits can bring much fear and anxiety, especially if you are in pain or have had a bad experience in the past. Knowing that you can relax through your appointment without feeling stress can make future visits much easier, which can help you improve your oral health.

When our patients are relaxed, dental visits are shorter and easier for both the patient and the dentist. And when it comes to oral health, prevention is best so that small problems don’t turn into big ones. Regular visits become much easier with less stress, which means a better chance to prevent the following:

^
Tooth decay
^
Periodontitis
^
Root canals
^
Spreading infection that can affect the heart
^
Cognitive decline due to infection from bad fillings or decay
When dental anxiety interferes with your health, our staff at Northern Dental Design can help. Just let Dr Zina Mahdi know about your fears before your visit, and she will discuss options for you that are safe and effective.

Why Get Sleep or Sedation Dentistry?

Patients who experience fear of the dentist will enjoy either form of sedation, while those who have phobias or require extensive treatment may desire sleep dentistry. These services help adults and children relax through an appointment and are especially helpful for those with special needs. Some dental procedures that usually involve these dental services include:
Tooth extractions
Root canal treatments
Gum infections and scaling
Wisdom teeth removal
Treatment for jaw discomfort or pain
Along with more extensive treatments, sedation dentistry can help those with extreme gag reflexes, which can make appointments overly long and frustrating. We aim to take the discomfort out of dental visits, so our patients can relax and get the treatment they deserve.
